10 Things to Remember Before You Do Your Project
Share these reminders with your team.
- Make a Plan: What do you want to do? How will you do it? Who can show you? What will you need? Making a plan is a great skill to help you with a project. Read your playbook and ask an adult about anything you do not understand.
- Work with your coach: Ask, “Can you help to make sure we have a good plan?” “Will you be able to help us fill out forms and get supplies?” “Can you drive us safely if we need to go somewhere?” Find a coach who is interested in helping you meet your goal.
- Ask Questions: The more questions you ask, the more you learn! There are a lot of people who can help you find the answers. The library has a lot of information and the librarian can help you find out what you need to know. You can also send in your questions to the SLANT45 website (slant45.org).
- Protect yourself: Wear gloves when working with any materials that could hurt your hands. Eye goggles protect your eyes from splashing liquids or dust. Wear ear plugs if you are working around loud noises. Tie your hair back and remove jewelry if it could get caught in machines. Aprons can protect your clothes from paint or grease.
- Follow rules: Every game plan and every job has rules. Everyone plays fair, works as a team and SCORES!
- Report dangers: Tell your coach or other adult if you see someone who is hurt or could get hurt. It is important that all your team members use tools correctly. It’s a lot more fun when everyone is safe!
- Report injuries: If you get hurt, even if it is a small cut, report it to your coach and let your family know. Your safety is very important.
- Talk to your family: Tell them what you are doing and when. Your parent or guardian must give permission for you to do your project. Share the good things you are doing and let them know if anything worries you. Your parents may give you good advice.
- Rest: It takes a lot of energy to work on a project. If you are tired, you might get hurt. Try to participate in your project when you are most alert!
- Be honest: Tell your coach if the project becomes too hard. Your coach can help the team figure out what to do. If you think your team can do more, tell your coach. Coaches like teams to try hard and make smart decisions.
