Step-by-Step Guide to a School/Group Assembly

Have an idea for a unique service-learning project? Want to get others in your school or organization involved? Follow these 8 easy steps to success!

STEP 1: Decide where you want to hold the event and get permission. Make sure to articulate why you think this project is important and how it will impact the kids involved.

STEP 2: Find a space large enough to hold your group. Is there an auditorium? What about the cafeteria? Perhaps a space outside?

STEP 3: Check the school/organization’s calendar and find a date. Maybe your assembly can be held close to an observed holiday, like MLK, Jr. Day or Veterans Day. Remember to lock in your date and reserve your space.

STEP 4: Work on your invitation list. Who do you want to involve? The whole school? 3rd-5th grade kids and teachers? Parents? Community? Consider sending invitations or personally inviting your guests. If you’re planning a large event (i.e. whole school or full grade team), make sure to contact your Coach Assistant to request special guest speakers (such as former pro football players!).

STEP 5: Make a statement! Think of a catchy name for your service-learning project. For example, if your project is about stopping bullying in your school, you can name it ‘Character Counts!’ Place posters, fliers and banners around the school to announce when and where the assembly will take place. Remember to specify your target group. Have students make these colorful signs and personalize them.

STEP 6: Plan your speech and rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! Think about your audience and what style of assembly you would like — a “pep rally” with cheers, pom-poms and whistles, or an information session with pictures projected on a screen and pamphlets being handed out?

STEP 7: Get ready for the big event! Recruit a small group of students to help clean, organize and decorate the space where the event will be held. Provide a sign-in and contact sheet at the entrance. If possible, plan to offer refreshments, goodies or door prizes.

STEP 8: Celebrate your success! Follow up with the kids and adults
interested in joining your team and schedule your first SLANT 45 service-learning planning project.
