SLANT 45 can be integrated into existing curriculum for any discipline. Just find your subject area below and read on to discover ideas for incorporating a SLANT 45 project into your lesson plan.
ENGLISH/READING
Reading
Why is reading important? How can we encourage others to read more? Students decide to create a school reading contest where the class with the highest number of reading hours receives a special prize or privilege.
Writing
Help your team of students choose a project category that interests them. Have them keep a daily or weekly journal to record their experiences, or make writing thank you notes or campaign letters part of the project.
Research
Help your team of students choose a project category that interests them. Use the process of researching service-learning opportunities to focus on reading comprehension.
MATH
Money and budgeting
Help your team of students choose a project that involves fundraising (from parents, the PTA, local businesses, etc.) Focus on how to create a budget for the project and track how much money has been received.
Graphs, fractions and percentages
Help your team of students choose a project that involves conducting a survey of other students in the school. Focus on analyzing and interpreting survey results using fractions, percentages and graphs.
SCIENCE
Conservation
What does it mean to save energy? Why is it important? What can we do to address this issue? Students create an educational program to teach other students about ways in which they can conserve energy.
The Human Body and Healthy Eating
Why does it matter what kind of food we eat? What effect does that food have on our bodies? What does it mean to eat healthy? What kinds of foods are good for us? Where do these foods come from? Students plant a school vegetable garden.
Recycling
What is recycling? Why do we do it? How can we encourage recycling at our school? Students decide to start a school recycling program.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Diversity
What is diversity? Why is it important? How can we promote it in our school? Students decide to write and produce a skit about diversity to perform for other students.
Poverty
What does it mean to be in need? What can we do to help others who lack basic necessities? Students decide to hold a clothing drive and donate the clothes to a local homeless shelter.
ART
Beautification
What does it mean to beautify a place? Why do we value beautification? What are its benefits? Students plant flowers around the front of the school.
Creative arts
Why is art important? What kinds of effects can artistic pieces have on those around them? Students create colorful drawings, paintings or cards to distribute to residents of a local nursing home.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical fitness
What does it mean to be physically fit? Why is fitness an important part of a healthy lifestyle? What can we do to promote physical fitness in our school? Students create a basketball tournament for other students and their families.
Teamwork
Help your team of students choose a project category that interests them. Focus on how successfully completing their project will hinge on teamwork. What is a team? What does it mean to be part of a team? Discuss how being part of a sports team is similar to being part of a SLANT 45 team – working together toward a common goal.
MUSIC
Songwriting
Help your team of students choose an issue they want to bring awareness to (e.g. health esteem, pollution, hunger, etc.). Students compose a song about the issue to perform for other students and/or parents.
Importance of music
Why is music important? Does our school have an adequate number of musical instruments for students to use? Students collect gently used instruments or raise money to purchase them for school use.
Music performance
Help your team of students choose a project category that interests them and that involves fundraising. Students create CDs of original musical performances and sell them to raise money for the project.
