The Reflective Collage is the last step to complete your SLANT 45 Service Learning Project, and is required in order to be eligible to attend the SLANT 45 Celebration Event in January 2011. Reflective Collages representing thousands of service learning hours will be the highlight of the SLANT 45 Art Exhibition. This exhibit is traveling to public installation venues throughout the region before, during and after Super Bowl XLV.

Tips for Creating a Reflective Collage

The goal of the Reflective Collage is to show in words and images what you did and how it changed you and your community. To get started, consider the following questions.

• What was the need you discovered?

• Why was doing something about the need so important to you?

• What action did you take?

• Why was your action important to you and the community?

Next, collect pictures and words that describe your experiences and feelings, and can help you tell the story of your service learning project artistically. Feel free to draw your own picture, or use a photograph to express the enthusiasm and satisfaction you felt because of your participation in the service-learning project.

• Describe your act of kindness through pictures with words so that anyone can understand your service learning project by looking at your collage.

• Cut an 8.5”x 8.5” piece of heavy paper or cardstock (see page 40 & 41 of the Coach’s Playbook for details).

• Mount a collage of your collected words and pictures on the paper.

• Materials can include pens, crayons, pencils, markers, watercolors, paints, photos, magazine images, newspaper type, cut paper, tape, glue.

For teams that are working in schools; ask your art teacher to help you! They could give you ideas about where to start and what materials to use.

Give your Reflective Collage to your team coach and they will make sure it is submitted. Check online at slant45.org in December 2010 to see where the exhibit locations will be in North Texas.

SLANT 45 Team Coaches: Be sure to label each collage on the back with the team member’s name, grade, city and service project. Reflective Collages are due by October 30, 2010 for inclusion in the SLANT 45 Art Exhibition. Submit your reflective collages to:
